Just how good has this man been, Barnsley fans? Adam Davies has had to truly work for his place as the first-choice goalkeeper at Oakwell, but his performances in recent years have certainly meant he is the right man for the jersey.
Davies joined the Tykes in 2014 having been released by Sheffield Wednesday without a senior appearance to his name. In his opening campaign, he began the season as number one, before being benched for a large chunk of the season, but he was then reinstated to number one in the latter stage of the season.
In the following campaign, Davies once again began as number one before being moved to the bench for a handful of games. However, he soon found his way back into the starting 11 and kept that place throughout the season as he was key to Barnsley winning the EFL Trophy and finishing sixth in the League One, subsequently gaining promotion via the play-offs.
For the last three seasons now, the 26-year-old has been the undisputed number one, in which time he has gained the captain’s armband as of this campaign under Daniel Stendel and he has gone on to play yet another pivotal role in Barnsley’s promotion chase. Such form has earned him a spot in the EFL League One Team of the Season and an appearance for the senior Welsh side.
However, with just months left on his Barnsley contract, that poses the question as to what is next for Davies?
The most unfortunate possibility for the Oakwell faithful is that Davies does not end up signing a new deal and he ends up leaving on a free, which would have a remarkable coup for any EFL side. However, as Stendel has already told the BarnsleyChronicle that “I hope he stays because we need him”, the likelihood is he will sign a new deal when the season is over.
If he is to sign a new deal, Davies is more than likely lead Barnsley into a Championship campaign and will hope to help establish the Reds as a second-tier outfit. If Barnsley can do that, then Davies would surely give his best years to the club who provided him with the opportunities to develop in professional football.
Although, if Barnsley were to go straight back down after next season, it would come as no surprise if a Championship outfit was to come in for his services. For now, though, Davies will just be focused on finishing the season strongly and then contract matters can be dealt with.
