What does the future hold for James Collins?

Fans at Kenilworth Road must almost be able to taste Championship football as Luton Town continue to extend their unbeaten run and remain in pole position to go up as champions of League One.

The Hatters’ faithful would have been forgiven if they had thought that Nathan Jones’ exit would have derailed them somewhat, whilst back-to-back promotions would not have been something many would have expected for the club to achieve – not even in their wildest dreams.

However, that could well be a reality for the Bedfordshire-based outfit this season and props certainly have to go to Mick Harford for getting the best out of the players he has in his squad, although the summer could mean one man may exit the club, even if they are in the Championship.

James Collins has been nothing short of impressive for Luton in the current campaign and has produced a number of performances that have earned him plenty of plaudits. Those displays have also earned him recognition from the Republic of Ireland recently as he was called up to Mick McCarthy’s just last month for their Euro 2020 qualifiers.

He operates as an out and out number nine who is extremely powerful, however, he also has the ability to be in the right place at the right time when it comes down to being in the opposition’s penalty box. He has a natural instinct in finishing well, whilst his ability in the air is very strong and can cause defenders plenty of problems.

The 28-year-old has had to step in for Danny Hylton, who has been hit with poor form and injuries this season and has achieved some remarkable stats. Leading the goalscoring charts with 21 goals in his 39 League One matches so far, it goes a long way into showing how important he has been.

Collins has not been goal-shy during his time at Luton though, as he managed to hit 19 last season for them as they won promotion from League Two and proves just how vital he has been at Kenilworth Road.

Arguably, he has been going under the radar with his performances and that has worked to the Hatters’ advantage so far, but this summer could become a real test for them, even if they are promoted to the Championship.

A number of clubs will be on the lookout for a new striker and could be attracted to the way that Collins plays and could look to tempt him into leaving Luton for a new challenge elsewhere. There are a number of ‘big clubs’ in the Championship and should any of them look to make an offer for the 28-year-old, that could prove extremely difficult for anybody involved to resist.

Luton fans, do you think Collins will still be at the club beyond the summer? Or do you fear that his performances will have made a number of clubs take note of how good he actually is? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
