What does the future hold for Joe Aribo at Charlton Athletic?

It has been a good League One campaign for Charlton Athletic this season as they push for promotion with midfielder Joe Aribo one of those at the heart of this pursuit for Championship football.

Failing to go all the way, though, could have some serious repercussions for the south London club, especially in their attempts to tie down Aribo to a new deal.

The former Staines Town man’s contract expires in the summer, and he is likely to attract interest from a host of teams in higher divisions.

Aribo had already been linked with a move away from The Valley just before the January transfer window with the Independent reporting on interest from Tottenham and Eintracht Frankfurt.

And with the Charlton man seemingly no closer to putting pen to paper on that extension, it is probably only a matter of time before rumours start to pick up again.

Aribo’s manager Lee Bowyer, however, has a clear warning, telling the midfielder not to make any hasty decisions.

“There’s no rush, your career is not a sprint,” Bowyer told News Shopper when speaking about Aribo’s contract situation and future.

“He’ll have a 14, 15-year career, which is a long time, don’t go rushing into anything and ruin it. He could go somewhere and end up back in League One after watching football for two years. It has to be the right place for his own good.”

Turning 23 in July, though, Aribo will look at some of his countrymen around his age, especially the ones in Germany such as Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson, and believe he can make it to that level amid the reported interest from Frankfurt.

The chance to go down a similar route as the above names in the Bundesliga or work under a coach like Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham are too good of opportunities to turn down, especially if Charlton find themselves stuck playing League One football for another season.
