# Leeds United: Noel Whelan says Whites transfer target Adolfo Gaich “has something pretty special”

**Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has discussed the potential of the club making a move for Argentine striker Adolfo Gaich.**

The Yorkshire club are on course for promotion to the Premier League as Championship leaders and they will restart their season with a [trip to Cardiff on Sunday 21 June](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12002798/championship-restart-the-live-games-on-sky-sports).

With the Whites in pole position to return to the top flight for 2020/21, Bielsa will likely want to bring in some new faces to strengthen the squad.

[Gaich](https://www.footballinsider247.com/leeds-united-keep-tabs-on-adolfo-gaich/), who has impressed in his homeland of Argentina with San Lorenzo by [netting five goals in 12 games](https://www.transfermarkt.com/adolfo-gaich/leistungsdaten/spieler/608469), has now emerged as a possible target. The young talent has a [£12m](https://www.footballinsider247.com/leeds-united-keep-tabs-on-adolfo-gaich/) release clause in his current contract at the club [which will expire in one-year](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adolfo-gaich/profil/spieler/608469) and it is thought that Leeds are now set to trigger that fee.

Touching on the matter, Whelan said to Football Insider: *“They’ve obviously done their checking on this player and not just over a short space of time, it’ll be a lengthy scouting mission looking at this sort of player.*

*“Sounds to me very much like a Ryan Edmondson – very good in the air, very powerful, strong so they’ve obviously seen they maybe need a little bit more height and power up front.*

*“He seems to know where the goal is, I’ve seen some of his clips, I’ve looked at him already and he’s a player, if he’s in the Argentina national squad, then he’s a player that is quite handy to have. You don’t just get into the Argentina side alongside Messi without being a very good player.*

*“I’m sure they’ve got a number of quality strikers in Argentina they can choose from so he obviously has something pretty special and £12million release clause, for someone so young, seems like a very, very good price.*

*“We’ve always said we need a change up front, something a little bit different – everyone was saying Ryan Edmondson but now this Argentinian player is different.*

*“He’s a bit more of a hold up player, he’s not blessed with pace from what I hear but he knows where the goal is and can bring others into play. It’s exactly the Patrick Bamford-type player but a bit more rugged, I would think, up front. If we can get this one it’s a good coup.”*

Whilst it would be a gamble to bring in Gaich, given his [inexperience and having not played in Europe](https://www.transfermarkt.com/adolfo-gaich/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/608469), Bielsa’s presence at Elland Road could help the youngster develop in England and become a potent striker like Bamford, who has struck [13 goals for Leeds this season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrick-bamford/leistungsdaten/spieler/183334).

Having [gained an international cap](https://www.transfermarkt.com/adolfo-gaich/nationalmannschaft/spieler/608469/verein_id/3437) for Argentina already, the young striker certainly has made the right impressions. Although a possible move to the English Premier League could be a huge step up for him, a fee of £12m for a bright young talent ought not to be disregarded.
