# Leeds: Journalist claims Patrick Bamford could return ‘sooner than expected’

**Patrick Bamford could make a welcome injury return for Leeds United’s Under-23s on Wednesday night, according to journalist Joe Donnohue.**

### The Lowdown: Bamford’s injury-plagued season

The 28-year-old was arguably the Whites’ star player last season, racking up a tally of [17 goals and seven assists](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/109670/History/Patrick-Bamford) on his return to the Premier League.

Unfortunately, Bamford’s 2021/22 campaign has been far more frustrating, with [two separate injury absences](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrick-bamford/verletzungen/spieler/183334) limiting him to just [five league starts](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/109670/Show/Patrick-Bamford) to date.

The hope is of course that the striker is back in the fold as soon as possible – the Whites have scored just 21 times in 19 games this term and desperately need their focal point back. A positive update has now emerged, in that respect.

### The Latest: Striker could return on Wednesday

[*Leeds Live*](https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/sport/leeds-united/leeds-united-patrick-bamford-injury-22631954)‘s Donnohue reported early on Tuesday morning that Bamford could make a return to action for the U23s on Wednesday evening, when they host Sunderland’s youngsters in the Premier League Cup.

That is as long as he has ‘convinced the medical staff he is ready’, as supporters no doubt wait with bated breath.

### The Verdict: Massive boost for Leeds

Bamford’s influence on this Leeds side has been highlighted so much in his absence, with his end product and link-up play an enormous loss for much of this season.

He scored swiftly on his original return to action [against Brentford](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1549681/Live/England-Premier-League-2021-2022-Leeds-Brentford) last month – he injured himself celebrating – and the Whites have struggled in front of goal without him. The three goals they struck against Burnley was the first time this season they have found the net three times in a Premier League fixture, a feat they accomplished on [ten](https://uk.soccerway.com/teams/england/leeds-united-afc/681/) occasions last term.

Bamford’s return could be the catalyst to turning Leeds’ season around and a positive runout against Sunderland in midweek will hopefully leave him primed for first-team action.
