# Leeds: Journalist makes key Brenden Aaronson claim

**RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson remains Leeds United’s ‘number one target’ this month, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.**

### The Lowdown: Leeds push to sign Aaronson

The Whites are in need of signing a new midfielder in the January transfer window, as Marcelo Bielsa looks to fill the sizeable void left by the [injured](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kalvin-phillips/verletzungen/spieler/351749) Kalvin Phillips.

Aaronson has been [strongly linked](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-transfer-rumours/leeds-united-sky-sports-drop-brenden-aaronson-latest-live-on-air/) with a move to Elland Road in recent days, with a number of bids made for the [15-time capped](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/brenden-aaronson/profil/spieler/393323) USA international.

Speaking to [*Give Me Sport*](https://www.givemesport.com/1825501-leeds-transfer-news-no1-january-target-identified-at-elland-road-as-fresh-bid-prepared), O’Rourke confirmed that Aaronson is the man the Whites most want to sign in the coming days:

### The Verdict: Deal looks likely

With each passing day, the more it looks as though Leeds will get their man, with reliable journalists such as Phil Hay [reporting](https://theathletic.com/news/leeds-to-raise-offer-for-salzburg-forward-aaronson-to-20-million/K6hmO4ltnkGO/) the news in the last 24 hours or so.

Aaronson could be a superb signing for the Whites, not only coming in as a long-term option but also someone who can immediately become an influential figure.

The American has been [hailed](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/oct/06/brenden-aaronson-usa-world-cup-concacaf-qualifying) as ‘special’ by former coach Jim Curtin and already has [51 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/brenden-aaronson/alletore/spieler/393323) to his name for Salzburg, scoring 10 times and registering 12 assists.

While more attack-minded than Phillips, he can still make up for the loss of him currently, averaging [two tackles](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/371012/Show/Brenden-Aaronson) per game in the Champions League this season.
