# Leeds: Junior Firpo backed to leave this summer

**Leeds United defender Junior Firpo may have played his last game for the club ahead of a summer exit, according to former top flight striker Kevin Phillips.**

### The Lowdown: Firpo disappoints at Leeds

The left-back joined the Whites from Barcelona last summer, in a move that was considered exciting, given the stature of club he was arriving from.

Firpo has flattered to deceive in a Leeds shirt, however, not always convincing in a defensive sense and rarely offering enough quality going forward, proving just [one assist](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/351252/Show/Junior-Firpo) all season.

The 25-year-old is now sidelined with a [knee injury](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-news/leeds-phil-hay-provides-junior-firpo-injury-update/) suffered at home to Aston Villa last week and he may not feature again for the remainder of the season.

### The Latest: Pundit backs summer exit

Speaking to [*Football Insider*](https://www.footballinsider247.com/junior-firpo-may-have-played-his-last-leeds-united-game-after-latest-development-pundit/), 48 year-old Phillips claimed that Firpo may have played his last match for Leeds after hearing the news of his injury:

> “It looks like he’s picked up a really bad injury there, first of all. But it’s just really not worked for him in a Leeds shirt at all.
>
> “I don’t think they have time to mess about in the transfer window now. They can’t stand by and wait for him to reach the required level; they need him to be ready now.
>
> “If they were to drop down to the Championship that could be a more suitable league for him to find his feet in, but that obviously isn’t the ideal scenario for them.
>
> “Hopefully he can make a speedy recovery but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not around next season.”

### The Verdict: Not cut the mustard

The hope was that Firpo was going to be an upgrade on Ezgjan Alioski at left-back but he has arguably been a downgrade, having impressed so little to date.

Alioski registered [five times](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/137161/History/Ezgjan-Alioski) more direct goal involvements during his final season at Elland Road, despite Firpo arriving with a reputation for being a full-back with good end product.

It could be good for all parties if Firpo moves on immediately this summer, with Jesse Marsch then able to bring in a left-back of his own choosing instead.
