# Leeds: Nigel Martyn talks up Patrick van Aanholt move

**Patrick van Aanholt would be a good signing for Leeds United this summer, according to former Whites goalkeeper Nigel Martyn.**

Marcelo Bielsa is likely to be on the lookout for a new left-back at the end of the season, with Ezgjan Alioski [set to move on](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-leeds-united-star-alioski-agrees-pre-contract/) to pastures new.

It may be that an experienced head comes in and Crystal Palace stalwart Van Aanholt has been [linked](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/crystal-palace-star-patrick-van-23707270) with a move to Elland Road.

The 30-year-old’s current deal at Selhurst Park [expires](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrick-van-aanholt/profil/spieler/52119) in the summer, so Leeds could snap the Dutchman up on a free transfer.

### Martyn discusses potential Van Aanholt move

Speaking to [*LeedsUnited.News*](https://www.leedsunited.news/exclusives/exclusive-nigel-martyn-believes-crystal-palace-left-back-would-be-a-good-signing-for-leeds-united/), Martyn believes Van Aanholt would be a shrewd addition by Bielsa, even though he hasn’t always always been impressed by him:

> “I have seen him play for Palace really well – but against Everton he was average. But I have seen him play really well for Palace, he scores the odd goal and links up well with \[Wilfried\] Zaha. He is looking to move from Palace.
>
> “That is a possibility, if Alioski – he’s been entertaining if nothing else, and does quite well on occasion. But he wants his contract to run out and get a good pay day somewhere, you can’t blame him.
>
> “Van Aanholt is not a bad full-back, but I wasn’t impressed with him against Everton. They’ll have watched him – he will certainly prefer playing at Elland Road than Selhurst Park, to play football. Bobbly surface!”

### Transfer Tavern take

Van Aanholt may be not an earth-shattering transfer that will drastically improve the Leeds side, but bringing him in for free in place of Alioski makes perfect sense.

The defender, who earns [£55,000](https://www.spotrac.com/epl/crystal-palace/payroll/) per week currently, has a huge amount of experience in the Premier League, having played for Palace and Sunderland in the division over the past seven years.

Granted, Van Aanholt only has [one assist](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/78221/History/Patrick-van-Aanholt) this season, but he would likely be given more attacking freedom under Bielsa than Roy Hodgson, and his attacking play has often been his best asset, scoring [at least two goals in six of his seven](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/78221/History/Patrick-van-Aanholt) full top flight campaigns.

***In other news, Leeds have been urged to tie one star player down to a new deal – find out who it is [here](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-transfer-rumours/leeds-whites-urged-to-tie-down-kalvin-phillips/).***
