# Leeds: Phil Jones linked with Elland Road move

**[Leeds United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-news/) have been linked with a surprise move for Manchester United defender Phil Jones.**

### The Lowdown: Old Trafford struggles

Jones, capable of playing as a [centre-back, right-back or holding midfielder](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/phil-jones/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/117996), is entering the final [12 months](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/phil-jones/profil/spieler/117996) of his Old Trafford contract.

The 30-year-old has struggled massively over the last three seasons, though, making just [six](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/phil-jones/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/117996) Premier League appearances.

He has missed a whopping [217](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/phil-jones/verletzungen/spieler/117996) games through injury during his career and was labelled as a [‘waste of time’](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1481043/Man-Utd-news-Rio-Ferdinand-slams-Phil-Jones-waste-of-time) by Rio Ferdinand, but it looks as if he may well be of interest to Victor Orta.

### The Latest: Leeds interest?

According to [Marca](https://www.marca.com/futbol/premier-league/2022/06/03/629a38dd46163f3a0f8b45bf.html), Leeds are one of three top-flight clubs interested in a move for Jones.

Southampton and newly-promoted Fulham are also name-checked in their [report](https://www.marca.com/futbol/premier-league/2022/06/03/629a38dd46163f3a0f8b45bf.html), with Jones holding a meagre [£2.7m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/phil-jones/profil/spieler/117996) Transfermarkt valuation.

### The Verdict: Avoid…

The Whites struggled massively at the back last season, with Norwich the only side to concede more goals than Leeds’ tally of [79](https://www.premierleague.com/tables?co=1&se=418&ha=-1). Jesse Marsch was thought to be planning a [defensive overhaul](https://www.footballinsider247.com/leeds-united-koch-offers/), but a possible move for Jones wouldn’t be a smart one.

As mentioned, he has a woeful injury record which is even worse than Leeds midfielder [Adam Forshaw](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-forshaw/verletzungen/spieler/121257) and has hardly played over the past three years.

Marsch already has [four](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leeds-united/kader/verein/399) senior centre-back options and a fifth in academy star Charlie Cresswell, so Orta should stay well away from a potential deal.
