# Leeds: Whites eyeing up move for Pape Gueye

**[Leeds United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-news/) are interested in making a move for impressive Marseille midfielder Pape Gueye, according to reports from France.**

### The Lowdown: Gueye impressing for Marseille

The 23-year-old has stood out as a solid performer for his club in recent times, making [three appearances](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/399047/Show/Pape-Gueye) in the Champions League this season.

Gueye will be hoping to shine for Senegal at the upcoming [World Cup](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/world-cup-2022/), too, as he aims to add to the [12 caps](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pape-gueye/profil/spieler/485963) he has already won for his country to date, playing in [all but one match](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pape-gueye/nationalmannschaft/spieler/485963/verein_id/3499) of their triumphant Africa Cup of Nations run at the start of 2022.

It looks as though there is interest in the midfielder from England, with Leeds one of those tracking his progress.

### The Latest: Leeds linked with Gueye

According to French outlet [Jeunes Footeux](https://www.jeunesfooteux.com/Pape-Gyeye-OM-a-des-touches-en-Premier-League_a59516.html) \[via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/leeds-southampton-targeting-ligue-1-midfielder-january-club-want-full-transfer/)\], the Whites are ‘notably’ keen on adding Gueye to their squad, boosting their midfield options in the process.

Southampton are also mentioned as potential suitors in the report, with the pair among those who are ‘attentive to the situation’, and the player himself could wish to leave Marseille due to a rarity of starts, having been selected just [three times](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/399047/Show/Pape-Gueye) in all competitions so far this season.

### The Verdict: Good young option

Gueye could be a brilliant prospective signing by Leeds, adding defensive expertise in an area of the pitch where the Whites appear to be [quite threadbare](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leeds-united/kadernachposition/verein/399), especially with [Stuart Dallas](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leeds-united/sperrenundverletzungen/verein/399) and [Adam Forshaw](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjos-OuipT7AhUCUcAKHcbKAtUQFnoECCYQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.footballfancast.com%2Fleeds-united-news%2Fleeds-latest-team-injury-news-adam-forshaw-blow-marsch-setback-villa-premier-league-gossip&usg=AOvVaw08pXko-q2OzxDM_fh65RWk) both out [injured](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leeds-united/sperrenundverletzungen/verein/399).

At 23, the Marseille man is still an improving footballer, and an average of [1.5 tackles](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/399047/Show/Pape-Gueye) per game in [Ligue](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/ligue-1-news/) 1 so far this season highlight his off-the-ball influence.

Gueye has been [described](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7986061/Arsenal-tracking-Pape-Gueye-face-competition-Ligue-2-star.html) as a cross between [N’Golo Kante](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ngolo-kante/erfolge/spieler/225083) and [Paul Pogba](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/paul-pogba/erfolge/spieler/122153), and it speaks volumes that he has been compared to two men who have won the World Cup and major European honours.

If he comes to Elland Road, he could help to fill the void left by Kalvin Phillips’ departure for Manchester City in the summer.
