# Leeds: Sky Sports drop on-air midfielder update

**[Sky Sport](https://www.skysports.com/transfer-centre)s have claimed live-on-air that Leeds United are keen to add to their midfield options during the January transfer window.**

### The Lowdown: First through the door…

The Whites have already secured their first addition of 2022 in striker Mateo Joseph Fernandez. The club [announced](https://www.leedsunited.com/news/team-news/29280/mateo-joseph-fernandez-signs-for-leeds-united) on Tuesday evening that the 18-year-old has joined from Spanish side Espanyol and has penned a three-and-a-half-year contract in Yorkshire.

Fernandez will go straight into Mark Jackson’s Under-23 side, with attentions now turning to some senior signings for Marcelo Bielsa, who has a number of star players out injured, one of which being [Kalvin Phillips](https://talksport.com/football/1012397/marcelo-bielsa-leeds-phillips-cooper/).

[Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/transfer-centre) shared a clip from their live transfer centre show on their online blog (January 4, 11:02).

When it came to Leeds, as relayed by [MOT Leeds News](https://motleedsnews.com/transfers/dharmesh-sheth-leeds-united-want-central-midfielder-despite-angus-kinnear-concerns/), reliable reporter Dharmesh Sheth said:

> “Leeds United, they want to strengthen in midfield but the chief executive, Angus Kinnear, admits it’s a big challenge to recruit in this month.”

### The Verdict: Who could come in?

Victor Orta is thought to be [after](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-leeds-united-in-january-transfer-u-turn-as-orta-lays-groundwork-for-two-signings/) defensive and attacking midfielders this month, with a number of players linked in recent weeks.

Former Leeds man [Ronaldo Vieira](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-transfer-rumours/leeds-marcelo-bielsa-would-welcome-ronaldo-vieira-signing/) has been rumoured to make a return, whereas journalists have addressed possible moves for summer targets [Lewis O’Brien](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-transfer-rumours/lewis-obrien-backed-january-move-leeds/) and [Nahitan Nandez](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-transfer-rumours/nahitan-nandez-leeds-transfer-latest-pete-orourke/).

Leeds could do with making early progress this month when it comes to bolstering their midfield ranks, especially with a crunch clash with relegation rivals Newcastle United on [January 22](https://www.skysports.com/leeds-united-fixtures), so hopefully, by that point, Bielsa will have at least one new midfielder to call upon.
