# Leeds United: Jean-Kevin Augustin will eventually take Patrick Bamford’s starting place, hints Paul Robinson

**Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes new signing Jean-Kevin Augustin will eventually claim a regular place in Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season.**

[Augustin](https://www.leedsunited.com/news/team-news/26131/leeds-united-complete-jean-kevin-augustin-deal) signed until the end of the season from RB Leipzig as he effectively replaces [Eddie Nketiah](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50968325), whose loan spell from Arsenal was cut short by the Gunners in early January.

Despite Nketiah’s [lack of game time](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eddie-nketiah/leistungsdaten/spieler/340324) at Elland Road, Robinson told [MOT Leeds News](https://motleedsnews.com/exclusives/exclusive-paul-robinson-this-is-who-will-be-number-one-striker-for-leeds/) that once the Frenchman is up to speed with Bielsa’s physical and tactical demands, the 22-year-old will be starting week-in, week-out for the promotion-chasing Whites.

He said: “He hasn’t played much for Monaco this season, I think he’s started two league games. He’s scored one goal. He’s not got a great record this season and it might take him a bit of time to get up to fitness. I think it would take any player some time to get up to the fitness levels that Bielsa wants, what he demands. I can’t see him coming straight into the starting line-up, I think it will take him two or three weeks. \[Ian\] Poveda will come into the team. And I think it’s only a matter of time before we see Augustin starting every week for Leeds.”

Robinson could be right with Augustin having to work his way into Bielsa’s starting XI, with the [manager hinting](https://twitter.com/PhilHay_/status/1222864673994891265) that he may not be considered to feature from the beginning at least when Leeds take on Wigan Athletic this weekend – something which the [Elland Road faithful](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/championship/leeds-united/leeds-united-fans-react-negatively-after-marcelo-bielsas-comments-on-jean-kevin-augustin/) did not react particularly well to.

However, it appears a little curious that Robinson feels that [Ian Poveda](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ian-poveda/leistungsdaten/spieler/392763) is ready to play for the team despite playing little more than 900 minutes of football all season (albeit at nearly double the amount that [Augustin](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jean-kevin-augustin/leistungsdaten/spieler/264956) has been afforded). That said, Augustin nevertheless may have to prove his fitness given his lack of action this term.

Robinson’s claim suggests that he rates Augustin over [Patrick Bamford](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrick-bamford/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/183334/plus/0?saison=&verein=&liga=1&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) (assuming Bielsa will continue to select one centre forward), and given the comparison between their top-flight records arguably favours [the Frenchman](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jean-kevin-augustin/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/264956/plus/0?saison=&verein=&liga=1&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) – with the youngster far more experienced and prolific during spells in France and Germany – perhaps he will show himself in time to be Leeds’ most potent goalscoring threat.
