# Leeds: Whites ‘in touch’ with Matheus Cunha’s camp

**[Leeds United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-news/) are ‘in touch’ with the camp of Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha ahead of January, according to journalist [Graham Smyth](https://twitter.com/GrahamSmyth?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor).**

### The Lowdown: Long-standing interest

The Brazilian still has [four](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/atletico-madrid/berateruebersicht/verein/13) years remaining on his contract in La Liga, but having recently fallen out of favour under manager Diego Simeone, has been linked with a move away from the Metropolitano Stadium.

[Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) club Wolves, alongside the Whites, have both been credited with an [interest](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/matheus-cunha-wolves-leeds-transfer-25748157) in the 23-year-old, and having failed to sign him last summer, Victor Orta could be about to take a second bite at the cherry.

### The Latest: Leeds make Cunha contact

In his column for the [Yorkshire Evening Post](https://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/sport/football/leeds-united/leeds-united-and-matheus-cunha-transfer-state-of-play-as-victor-orta-works-on-striker-pursuit-3952466), Smyth revealed that Leeds have made contact and are set to ‘stay in touch’ with Cunha’s camp as they ‘monitor’ his situation ahead of the winter market.

The Elland Road outfit will ‘continue to focus’ on other targets, though the sporting director has had the forward ‘near the top’ of his wishlist for years.

The Atletico star is described as an ‘affordable’ option, and a player Orta would sign ‘in a heartbeat’ should the opportunity arise.

### The Verdict: Bamford alternative

Patrick Bamford has been in and out of the side due to consistently sustaining [injuries](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrick-bamford/verletzungen/spieler/183334) so Leeds are in need of an alternative, and Cunha would be the perfect candidate.

The ‘Henry-esque’ attacker, as [dubbed](https://twitter.com/ftalentscout/status/1307332203987304451?s=46&t=CNi25VDCcAGyfa82OZ5cHQ) by [talent scout Jacek Kulig](https://twitter.com/FTalentScout) for his slick dribbling and calm finishing, has posted 15 goal contributions during his time in Spain and also has the versatility to operate on the left wing ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matheus-cunha/leistungsdaten/spieler/517894)).

Jesse Marsch was assistant to head coach Ralf Rangnick in Cunha’s spell at RB Leipzig, so this existing connection could give Leeds the advantage in the race for his services.
