Leeds United: Darren Bent hails Patrick Bamford’s transition to Premier League - Leeds United

Former Premier League striker Darren Bent has heaped praise on the shoulders of Patrick Bamford over his transition from the Championship to England’s top flight.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have had quite a remarkable 12 months, having won the Championship title and sealed automatic promotion to the Premier League.

One of the key performers for Leeds over that period has been Bamford, who netted an impressive 16 goals last term to help the club return to England’s top flight after a 16-year absence. The former Chelsea and Middlesbrough man has followed that up with a superb start to the new season, scoring six goals in six games.

What has Bent said about Patrick Bamford’s form?

“He’s in the form of his life,” Bent told Football Insider when speaking about the 27-year-old English striker.

“I would put myself in this bracket, some people are more suited and more comfortable playing in the Premier League than they are in the Championship.

“I don’t know if that is because you get a little bit more time on the ball or what it is but he looks so comfortable.

“You can take nothing away from those last two finishes.

“The second one was good getting it out of his feet and smashing it into the top corner.

“The last one with his touch, there are a few people around him, he manoeuvres, uses his body and finds that far top corner.

“It is a step up but I knew he’d score goals, I was always convinced he could score goals in the Premier League.

“I didn’t think it would be at this rate where it’s six in his first six games.”

Bamford, who netted a sublime hat-trick against Aston Villa on Friday evening, is set to spearhead Leeds attack when they face Leicester City in their next Premier League fixture on 2nd November.

Should Patrick Bamford be playing for England?

Despite being 27 and having Premier League experience, Bamford has never been considered for a full England call-up but, with his form this season in England’s top flight, calls are now being made for the striker to receive a chance with Gareth Southgate’s national team.

With the likes of Danny Ings and Callum Wilson being handed a chance at international level in recent times, it should come as no surprise if Bamford is called up. On form, the striker has to be included by Southgate in the next international break…
