Leeds United's potential move for exciting PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo is now looking 'unlikely', according to reliable journalist David Ornstein.

The Lowdown: Gakpo on fire this season

The 23-year-old is enjoying a sensational start to the season for the Eredivisie giants, scoring nine goals and registering six assists in just nine league starts.

Gakpo has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs in January or next summer, and a recent report has even claimed that Leeds have agreed personal terms with the Netherlands international.

However, it has now been claimed elsewhere that the probability of the Dutchman lining out at Elland Road is low.

The Latest: Gakpo move looks 'unlikely'

Taking to Twitter in sharing a corresponding report for The Athletic on Monday morning, Ornstein said that Leeds' move for Gakpo does not seem likely to happen, with the five-word summary of: "Gakpo to Leeds currently unlikely."

The report in The Athletic states that, despite recently being close to an agreement with the Whites, the 23-year-old's exceptional form has altered his expectations and he is no longer in favour of such a move.

The Verdict: Big blow for Leeds

This comes as a massive blow for Leeds after such a positive claim had come to light beforehand, with Gakpo a special young player who has been described as 'incredible' by Sky Sports-featured analyst Statman Dave.

His relentless stream of end product is something which could have taken Leeds to the next level and his long-term potential means he could have been a star at Elland Road for many years.

The fact that Jesse Marsch's side can't offer European football to Gakpo could certainly make it harder to attract him, though, and it feels more likely that he will eventually join a club playing in either the Champions League or Europa League, with him currently featuring in the latter tournament for PSV.
