After gaining promotion to the Premier League this summer, Marcelo Bielsa’s side have had a good start on their return to the top flight, with seven points from four games including a 1-1 draw against Manchester City.
Poveda made a good impression when called upon against Pep Guardiola’s side last weekend, gaining himself a 6.72 WhoScored rating for his 45-minute showing in which he completed two dribbles and executed one key pass.
Poveda impressing Elland Road staff and players
With such an impression being made by the 20-year-old, Football Insider reports that staff and players Leeds have been ‘blown away’ by what the have seen of the youngster. That comes after ex-Whites defender Dominic Matteo lavished praise on the winger, who he called “such an exciting player and one to keep an eye on”.
A second half substitute against Guardiola’s side, the 20-year-old proved to be a problem for Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy and it seems his efforts are now starting to cause quite a stir amongst the Whites’ personnel.
Could Poveda be a better option that Raphinha?
As the international transfer window came to a close last Monday, Leeds tied up the £16.72m signing of Raphinha from Ligue 1 side Rennes on deadline day.
That move seemed to rule out any chance of Poveda being handed regular playing time but, with the impressions he is continuing to make at Elland Road, Bielsa’s liking and trust of the youngster will now be tested.
Bielsa now has an abunance of dangerous options on the flanks, with Jack Harrison and Helder Costa as his preferred choices so far this season, but Poveda could yet offer him serious food for thought.
