Karen Carney was 'gutted' to see Leeds United's Patrick Bamford sustain another injury against Wolves on Friday night.

The lowdown

The striker lasted only 23 minutes at Molineux before he had to be withdrawn by Jesse Marsch. It was just his seventh Premier League start of the season, and his second since returning from a long-term hamstring injury.

The Englishman hasn't played more than 45 minutes since the 1-1 draw at Newcastle United way back in September. An ankle injury in the autumn was almost immediately followed by the aforementioned hamstring problem.

The latest

Carney said that Bamford's latest body blow is a significant setback for Leeds and expressed her sympathy for the 28-year-old amid his injury nightmare.

She told Premier League Productions (via MOT Leeds News): "That's a big one. I'm gutted for him. You don't want to see that given his recent injury record."

The verdict

After finishing ninth in their first season back in the Premier League following promotion, Leeds have tumbled down the table to 16th. There are plenty of reasons for this drop-off, but Bamford's predominant absence is among the most significant.

He was their top scorer by a long way last term, netting more than double the amount of his nearest challenger Stuart Dallas (17 compared to eight). His all-round contribution shouldn't be underestimated either - he set up seven goals for team-mates in 2020/21.

Simply put, Bamford is one of the players who makes Leeds tick, and his latest injury blow is indeed a "big one" for the Whites.
