Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford picked up a ‘knock’ last week, Adam Pope reports.

The Lowdown: Bamford’s injury issues

Bamford enjoyed a brilliant first season with the Whites back in the Premier League, playing every game in 2020/21 and contributing to 25 goals.

However, the 29-year-old was limited to just nine league appearances last season due to ankle, hamstring and foot problems, which played a big part in Leeds' second-season struggles, narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day.

Those injury issues have continued into the current campaign, with the forward already missing two matches after beginning the season seemingly fully fit.

The Latest: Bamford injury scare

Pope took to Twitter following Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Aston Villa, relaying comments from Jesse Marsch.

The head coach admitted that ‘Bamford had received a knock in the week’, while Joe Gelhardt, who didn’t make the matchday squad, wasn’t injured.

Pope tweeted: "JM unhappy that time wasting is not being clamped down upon. Bamford had received a knock in the week. No injury for Gelhardt. Says his mentality is great & he may be used in Papa John's on Tues."

The Verdict: Reason for substitute appearance?

Bamford was named on the bench at Elland Road on Sunday and only played 22 minutes, despite previously featuring for 76 minutes and scoring a hat-trick for the under-21s during the international break.

Rodrigo was preferred to lead the line, so the Englishman's latest injury scare could have played a part in Marsch’s decision to go with the Spaniard.

It just shows that Leeds still need to be extremely cautious with Bamford due to his injury history over the last 18 months and every 'knock' is going to be cause for concern, but hopefully he’ll avoid these niggling issues going forward.
