Leeds stand to make much more from the sale of Raphinha to Barcelona than has been reported, according to CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs.

The lowdown

Spanish reporter Gerard Romero had claimed that Barcelona have agreed to pay Leeds a guaranteed €50million (£42.3million), with a further €10million (£8.5million) potentially arriving in add-ons.

The Whites' stance has always been that will allow the Brazilian to leave Elland Road if their demands are met. They've been described as 'sympathetic' to his lofty ambitions.

Raphinha was left out of Jesse Marsch's squad for the pre-season tour of Australia, which could enable him to finalise a move fairly swiftly.

The latest

On his Twitter account on Sunday night, Jacobs shared a pretty contrasting view of events.

He 'can confirm' that 'Leeds and Barcelona have finally reached an agreement' for Raphinha.

But he says the deal could be far more lucrative for the Whites than others have suggested.

"My understanding is the €50 million + 10 fee is incorrect (Leeds rejected that offer quite some time ago) and the deal is actually worth close to €75 million (£63.4million)."

The verdict

Leeds have already netted just under £44million from Kalvin Phillips' move to Manchester City, and so Raphinha's exit could see them break the £100million barrier in terms of outgoings.

That should inflate Leeds' spending power very nicely as they pursue another forward.

A potential £63.4m seems a fair price for Raphinha in the current market.

Still to reach his theoretical peak at the age of 25, he's been directly involved in 29 Premier League goals for Leeds since he arrived and has established himself at international level for no. 1-ranked Brazil.

And those numbers are all the more impressive when you consider that he was playing for a side that finished ninth in 2020/21 and barely avoided relegation last term.
