Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Leeds United ace Carlton Palmer has suggested that Marcelo Bielsa may need to invest during the January transfer window.
Palmer tips for investment
Leeds have had a mixed start to the campaign following their promotion to the Premier League. They have picked up some impressive results, such as the 3-0 victory away at Aston Villa and the 1-1 draw with Manchester City. However, they have also been picked apart at times, losing 4-1 against Leicester and Crystal Palace.
They have ten points after eight games and are in 15th place in the table, and Palmer believes investment is needed. He said:
“They might have to invest well in the next market because obviously, you know injuries and suspensions will play a part.”
Could be the difference
Leeds were busy during the summer transfer window, spending £96.1m on a number of new recruits. However, that may not be enough to keep the Elland Road outfit in the top-flight beyond this campaign.
Do Leeds need more investment?
With the higher pace and fitness requirements of the Premier League, more investment may indeed be needed. Obviously they should not go overboard – it is important not add too many new faces to the squad halfway through the season – but one or two new arrivals could be the difference between survival and relegation.
Bielsa will likely already have some targets in mind, and Palmer knows all too well how gruelling a Premier League campaign can be, so is spot on to point towards injuries and suspensions as a reason for more investment.
