Leeds: Ben Brereton-Diaz update shared by journalist -Leeds United News

Leeds United do not see Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton-Diaz as a ‘lead target’, according to CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs

The lowdown

Leeds are considering ‘many forwards‘ as they approach the final fortnight of the transfer window.

There are three out-and-out no. 9s in the Whites’ squad – Patrick Bamford, Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood.

But Bamford was forced off against Southampton at the weekend with an adductor problem, and Gelhardt and Greenwood (both 20) may still be considered very raw.

Transfer insider Dean Jones told GiveMeSport on Saturday that Brereton-Diaz features on the club’s list of external options.

The latest

Jacobs, running through potential striker targets for Leeds, says ‘there’s nothing advanced’ on Brereton-Diaz.

‘Several EPL clubs’ have looked at him this summer, and last January, but ‘a few top scouts question whether’ his hold-up play and his awareness are Premier League-standard.

Jacobs does stress, however, that Brereton-Diaz possesses ‘clear potential’.

The verdict

What do the stats tell us about Brereton-Diaz’s game?

Well, first and foremost, he’s prolific. He’s started the current campaign with two goals in three Championship matches, having bagged 22 in 37 last term (and earned a spot in the Championship Team of the Year).

He isn’t someone who will fashion a particularly high volume of goalscoring chances, though – he only notched three assists, and created three big chances, in 2021/22.

The Chilean’s involvement in build-up might also be somewhat limited, if his average of 11.7 passes per game is anything to go by.

And the same could be said for his defensive contribution, with the 23-year-old winning possession only 0.4 times per match.

Still, Leeds are unlikely to find the perfect all-round package as a back-up to Bamford, and you could argue the need for a reinforcement is pressing.

If they can talk Blackburn down from their reported £20million demands, then it could still be a deal worth pursuing, especially considering pundits like Paddy Kenny have claimed he is ‘on fire’.
