Danny Mills has suggested that Leeds United could look to sell Kiko Casilla and replace him with Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland.
From an outside perspective, it is hard to think of a better-suited ‘keeper than Casilla to be Leeds’ number one if they are promoted to the Premier League, something for which they are on course as leaders of the Championship.
Casilla, who moved to Elland Road in 2018 on a four-and-a-half-year deal from Real Madrid, has established himself as the club’s first-choice keeper, making 35 appearances in the league this term in which he has secured 15 clean sheets. However, his reputation has somewhat diminished after a racism charge which saw him receive a ban of eight games and fined £60,000 for racially abusing Charlton Athletic loanee Jonathan Leko.
With the future of Casilla uncertain at the Yorkshire club, Mills has now discussed a potential replacement, claiming that Butland would be a good option.
“Joe Hart will be available on a free transfer this summer so that could be an option,” Mills told Football Insider.
“I also wonder what Jack Butland is doing next season. If Leeds are in the Premier League, that will be a massive attraction to a lot of players. There will be options.
“Casilla has done great for Leeds but he is pretty much going to miss the rest of the season if we restart. By the time he is available I suspect Leeds will be promoted.”
Butland, who has been the number one for Championship strugglers Stoke this term, has managed eight clean sheets in 30 league games in 2019/20 and has a current market valuation of £5.85m as per Transfermarkt.
Mills has valid reasons for recommending the nine-cap England goalkeeper for Leeds. Butland certainly has a lot to prove and needs a place to get his career back on track, and with the Whites expected to gain promotion to the Premier League, that potential link-up could suit both club (getting an international ‘keeper) and player (fresh start at an upwardly mobile outfit).
It is hard to compare both Casilla and Butland but, with the former seeing his reputation damaged, now may be the right time to swap him for a younger, international-standard option in the Stoke man.
