Leeds United have been linked to Romain Perraud recently and former footballer Danny Mills has suggested that the transfer would be an excellent acquisition.
What Mills had to say about Perraud
Speaking to Football Insider, Mills said: “It’s one of Bielsa’s top priorities. When you look at the left-back position, Alioski fills in from time to time, as does Dallas. They’ve done incredibly well, don’t get me wrong, but they are filling in. You do need at some point a specialist in that position.
“It’s bizarre isn’t it that the first thing we talk about is how many assists a full-back’s got? He’s a left-sided defender, ‘defender’ being the keyword.
“But that’s how the modern game is, it’s no so much ‘Oh, he’s a great defender, he’s been involved in X clean sheets,’ it’s ‘How many assists has he got? How many crosses has he put in?’ But having a natural left-sided player can be so useful in terms of adding a little bit of balance to the side.”
Should Leeds sign the defender?
Perraud is valued at £7.20m and is only 23 years-old, but looks to already be a very solid full-back and is currently having a brilliant season in Ligue 1. He has made 21 appearances in the division, managing on average 1.8 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and two clearances per game (WhoScored) – stats that rank him in the top six among all of his teammates at Brest.
He has also been a great attacking threat for his side, managing 1.3 shots and one key pass a game, which ranks him fourth in both categories. The Frenchman has an impressive three goals and five assists to his name this season, with no defender providing more assists than him in the entire French first division.
Perraud looks to be a typical Bielsa player as he offers a lot going forward and loves bombing down the wing and overlapping the forward players – only two Premier League defenders have more than five assists this season.
It is interesting to see Director of Football Victor Orta scouting summer targets so Leeds can be more than just a club who battle for safety next season, and it shows Andrea Radrizzani wasn’t lying about the club’s plans for the future.
