Leeds United defender Diogo Monteiro has ‘made a positive impression on coaching staff’ at Thorp Arch, Joe Donnohue reports.

The Lowdown: January arrival

Monteiro made the move to Elland Road during the January window, arriving on deadline day from Swiss side Servette FC.

Since then, the 18-year-old has made three appearances for the U21s and has featured on the bench for the first team in three Premier League fixtures and in the FA Cup defeat to Fulham.

The Latest: Donnohue’s post

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Donnohue took to Twitter on Wednesday to share what he’s heard about the teenage defender since arriving at the club.

He said that Monteiro ‘has already made a positive impression on coaching staff’ and ‘wants to do extra work on the training pitch & in video sessions’.

The Verdict: One to watch

Phil Hay previously stated that Leeds see Monteiro as a player who could play in the first team if necessary, similar to how they first viewed Wilfried Gnonto, and it looks as if he is making an impact around Thorp Arch.

Gnonto has gone on to become key player for the Whites in the Premier League, so if Monteiro continues to impress, he could be making his debut sooner rather than later.

You’d expect that if Leeds’ senior centre-backs stay fit between now and May, Monteiro will have to stay patient for his chance, but he could be a player to keep an eye on in 2023.
