Leeds United: Noel Whelan tips Gaetano Berardi to be brought back into the first team

Leeds United: Noel Whelan tips Gaetano Berardi to be brought back into the first team - Leeds United News

Former Leeds United attacker Noel Whelan believes that Gaetano Berardi will come straight back into Marcelo Bielsa’s team.

Berardi returns

The 32-year-old has not featured at all during the 2020/21 campaign after suffering cruciate ligament damage in July last year, which has seen him miss a total of 26 games.

Footage was uploaded on the club’s official Twitter account of Berardi back at Thorpe Arch for the first-team, which may be a hint of his possible involvement in the near future.

Can you beat the impossible Leeds players quiz? First up, who is this battling against Watford in the FA Cup?

The Swiss right-back has scored two goals and provided seven assists from 155 appearances and his last involvement with Leeds was against Derby County in the Championship last season.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan believes that Bielsa will have no hesitations about bringing Berardi in almost immediately.

“Berardi is full of experience. He’s an honest player who knows the club very well and always gives 100%,” he said.

“It’s nice to see him back in the swing of things and recovering from the injury that he had.

“This season we have seen every club delve deep into their squads because it’s such a strange season with so many niggles and injuries happening to players.

“It was a very quick turnaround after the end of last season, and it takes its toll, we’ve seen a lot of players used who probably wouldn’t have been used in a normal season.

“It would be great to see him back. It would be great to give him a Premier League game so he can say he played in the Premier League as well.

“Right now we’ve got two centre-halves who are out injured and not that many options in that position so when Bielsa feels he’s right, ready and match fit we will be seeing him straight back in the squad and into the team.”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

With both Diego Llorente and Robin Koch both injured, it may be a good time to get Berardi back into the team.

It will be a long-awaited return for Berardi. But the question remains whether he can get up to speed straight away especially considering he has had no Premier League experience and is coming back for so many months out.

Time will tell whether Bielsa will give him the nod to feature in the team and how soon that might happen.
