Leeds United forward Ian Poveda has suffered a hamstring injury out on loan with Blackpool.

The Lowdown: Blackpool loan

The 22-year-old, who former Elland Road front man Noel Whelan labelled ‘exciting’, sealed a late move away from Elland Road in the summer, joining Blackpool until the end of the season.

He has made two appearances for The Seasiders, one of which came from the off in a 1-0 win over Huddersfield. Poveda spent last season out on loan with Blackburn but suffered a serious ankle injury with Rovers, and it looks as if he has picked up another problem.

The Latest: Tight hamstring

The Blackpool Gazette shared an injury update on Tuesday from Michael Appleton’s pre-match press conference.

The Blackpool boss said that Poveda has ‘a tight hamstring’ and is ‘50/50’ for the club’s trip to Rotherham this evening, though Jesse Marsch is surely hoping the youngster is not risked if there is any chance it could worsen and scupper his development.

The Verdict: Not ideal

Poveda made 14 Premier league appearances during the 2020/21 campaign, but since then he has struggled to play regular first-team football due to injury.

He’ll be hoping to become a key man for Blackpool in the Championship over the coming months, especially as he still has just under two years remaining on his Leeds contract.

A promising season with Blackpool could catch Marsch’s eye or at the very least put him in the shop window, potentially granting a win-win situation if Leeds get a decent fee and the youngster finds a permanent home where he can play regularly.

Another muscle injury won’t help his case.
