Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay has said that Jamie Shackleton knows he is ‘almost done’ at Elland Road.

The Lowdown: Millwall loan

Shackleton, hailed as an ‘important’ player by Marcelo Bielsa, made the move to Millwall over the summer on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old was joined by Whites defender Charlie Cresswell and has featured in all ten Championship fixtures under Gary Rowett.

The midfielder, who has turned out on 79 occasions for Leeds, is still under contract at Elland Road until 2024, but it looks as if he could be on the move for good next year.

The Latest: Hay’s claim

Writing in a story for The Athletic on Tuesday, mainly about Cresswell’s time at The Den, Hay also provided an update on Shackleton.

He stated that the player “knows that he and the club are almost done”, with Millwall having a deal in place to make a move permanent at the end of the season.

The Verdict: Makes sense

Shackleton has struggled to nail down a regular role with Leeds, with 51 of his 79 appearances coming from the bench. Therefore, a permanent exit could be best for all involved, with the player at the stage of his career where he needs to be starting week in, week out.

He is doing just that with Millwall both in central midfield and on the right, so everyone may well be open to exercising a permanent option come the end of the season.
