Leeds United: Harry Winks could be perfect Mateusz Klich replacement

Leeds United: Harry Winks could be perfect Mateusz Klich replacement -Leeds United News

Leeds United have once again been linked with a move for Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks, who could well come in following rumours linking Mateusz Klich with an exit.

The Lowdown: Klich to leave?

The Whites have sent a number of players out on loan this summer, with Jesse Marsch recently hinting at an exit for Klich after not using the midfielder in Leeds’ final pre-season friendly with Cagliari.

The Poland international appears to be after more game time ahead of this year’s World Cup in Qatar, with a temporary move to FC Utrecht being mooted.

Klich spent time with Utrecht back in 2018 and the Dutch side now appear to have the money to fund another loan move, with the 32-year-old determined to leave Elland Road.

The Latest: Journalist’s Winks claim

Tottenham correspondent Charlie Eccleshare recently told GiveMeSport that he’s ‘heard’ Leeds’ name mentioned when it comes to Winks.

However, the journalist added that he doesn’t think a move to Elland Road will materialise, so fans will have to wait and see if Victor Orta can change that.

The Verdict: Better suited?

Should Klich get his move away, Jesse Marsch would be left with just three senior central midfielders, one of them being Adam Forshaw who is currently injured.

Therefore, a swoop for Winks, who was offered to Leeds earlier in the year, could now make more sense under the American.

Where will Leeds finish this season?

Marsch has brought in two holding midfielders already in Marc Roca and Tyler Adams, and Winks, also a defensive-minded midfielder, could suit his 4-2-2-2 system better than Marcelo Bielsa’s 4-1-4-1 formation, which saw Kalvin Phillips and Klich shine.

Winks has made 114 appearances as a holding midfielder compared to Klich’s 19, so may well be a perfect third option alongside Roca and Adams. He also has plenty of Premier League experience and is capable of playing in a positive box-to-box role in a two-man midfield.

Winks actually ranks much higher than Klich for passes attempted, passing accuracy and progressive passes made per 90, also averaging more interceptions and blocks [FBref], suggesting he has the control and positional intelligence to fill that role at Elland Road better than the popular Pole.

It could well be one to watch should Klich leave, as Marsch may need to sign another midfielder with Darko Gyabi expected to work his way through the youth sides before entering the first-team plans.
