Leeds United journalist Joe Donnohue has labelled a potential new contract for Joe Gelhardt as ‘excellent business’.

The Lowdown: Advanced talks

Gelhardt enjoyed a breakthrough 2021/22 season at Elland Road, making 20 Premier League appearances.

The 20-year-old contributed to six top-flight goals, the last of which came in the final home game of the campaign against Brighton, in which he set up Pascal Struijk with a sublime bit of skill in stoppage time.

Graham Smyth of The Yorkshire Evening Post shared an update regarding the forward’s Leeds future on Thursday evening, claiming the club are in ‘advanced talks’ over a new long-term deal that could be concluded as early as next week.

The Latest: Donnohue reacts

Fellow YEP journalist Donnohue took to Twitter shortly after the news broke regarding Gelhardt.

He said it would be 'excellent business’ if Leeds chiefs can secure the youngster to a new long-term deal.

The Verdict: Perfect

It’s clear to see Leeds have a future star on their hands in Gelhardt, so extending his stay in Yorkshire beyond 2024 would be a great move.

He now has a season of Premier League experience under his belt, where he came up trumps when needed most with a late winner against Norwich and the skill vs Brighton.

The forward has also recently been nominated for the 2022 Golden Boy award, and you’d like to think the best is still yet to come from ‘Joffy’, hopefully at Elland Road.
