Leeds United have noticeably struggled in the games that Kalvin Phillips has been absent, and Noel Whelan has been discussing his latest injury and the impact it will have on the club.
What Whelan had to say about Phillips
The former Leeds striker was discussing the midfielder’s injury and told Football Insider: “It’s a huge blow, there’s no doubt about that, because I think we need that kind of physicality within our side
“Losing Kalvin and not having him in that side, I think we could see last week (v Arsenal), especially in the first half, how difficult it was to get to grips without Kalvin.”
The player is a crucial influence at Leeds
Phillips has been vital in getting the club back into the Premier League, and and has also become an England player, with Gareth Southgate bringing him into the fold at international level (Transfermarkt).
Alex McLeish heaped praised on the midfielder earlier this season as he told Football Insider: “Phillips has been outstanding, every game you see him in, you know.” The player is valued highly, with CIES suggesting he is worth around £17.5m.
The fact that Whelan has claimed that the club struggle without Phillips is highlighted by the fact that when he has not been in the Premier League side this season, they have only won one game out of five (Transfermarkt). Therefore all associated with the club that he will be able to return sooner rather than later.
