Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips believes that Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford should be rewarded for what he has achieved this season.
The 27-year-old has been magnificent for Marcelo Bielsa’s side during their first season back in the Premier League, on the back of the fair share of criticism he has received in recent years.
Currently earning £35k-per-week at Elland Road (Spotrac), Phillips stated that Leeds should look to offer him a blockbuster deal to keep prized eyes away from him.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Sunderland star responded when he was asked whether Bamford deserves to be the highest-paid player on the books.
“He definitely deserves to be in and around it. He’s their main talisman and credit to the player. There were question marks on him, I put question marks on him.
“Can he score goals in the Premier League? He’s proved everyone wrong, he can.
“He’s a threat, he’s chipping in with goals. He’s involved in everything that Leeds do so he definitely deserves to be up there in that top three, four or five earners. He’ll be rewarded with a good contract and so he should be for the work that he’s done.
“I give a lot of credit to the player and of course Marcelo Bielsa as well for consistently picking him when Bamford was having a tough time, I’m sure the contract will get sorted.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
We agree with Phillips here. The impact that Bamford has had on the Premier League this season has been an eye-opener, to say the least considering the stick he was getting last year.
Bamford will be one of the key factors in terms of the Whites restoring their top-flight status, if they avoid relegation this season, and should be honoured for that.
There is plenty of football still to be played and it will be interesting to see if Bamford can hit the 20-goal mark for the season, which would be an incredible achievement.
