Journalist Pete O’Rourke tweeted this week that the Whites and Fulham are both ‘closely monitoring’ the 15-year-old, who Leeds apparently watched in action for Scotland’s under-16 side on Wednesday.
If he comes to Yorkshire, Pirie would join a crop of talented young strikers at Elland Road which already includes the likes of summer signing Wilfried Gnonto, Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood.
O’Rourke said that Leeds are merely keeping tabs on Pirie, but Aberdeen Live journalists Graeme Young and Keiran Fleming have suggested that it’s gone beyond that point now.
The Premier League side have shown a ‘cast-iron’ interest in signing the 15-year-old, who is viewed as one of the most exciting prospects at Aberdeen.
They explain that Leeds and their fellow English clubs are increasingly turning their eyes to Scottish prospects after Brexit made it more difficult to pick up ‘top talents’ from the continent.
Leeds’ recruitment staff might well have been impressed by what they saw from Pirie earlier this week. He scored for his country in that 4-2 defeat against Denmark and was also involved in a sequence which led to a penalty (via Aberdeen Live).
Young and Fleming describe him as a ‘sensation’, and perhaps the Whites want to snap him up now before he is on the radar of even more clubs.
Indeed, Victor Orta has already recognised Aberdeen’s capacity to develop impressive young talents.
In the summer, he pursued a deal for 18-year-old right-back Calvin Ramsay, but in the end, it was Liverpool who won the race for the £6.5m transfer. Hopefully the Leeds chief will have better luck with this latest pursuit of a Pittodrie gem.
