Nottingham Forest have made an offer for rumoured Leeds United target Cody Gakpo, according to Foot Mercato.

The Lowdown: Orta makes approach

Leeds have been heavily linked with a move for the PSV winger this summer, with rumours continuing in recent days. Reports have suggested that the Whites have registered their interest in the Dutchman, who netted twice for his current club on Saturday.

However, it looks as if Victor Orta and co will now face stiff competition from Forest, who have been extremely busy in the transfer window following their return to the Premier League, with no fewer than a dozen summer signings made already.

The Latest: Forest bid for Gakpo

Foot Mercato shared a story regarding Gakpo on Sunday, where Leeds were once again mentioned.

However, they claimed that it is Forest who have made an offer to the player, but the report doesn’t share any further details on figures involved.

The Verdict: Look elsewhere

Leeds appear to have replaced Raphinha with Luis Sinisterra, so bringing in another winger in Gakpo doesn’t seem to be crucial at this moment in time, although Whites officials may see this update as a blow following their extensive interest in the Dutch forward.

A new left-back could be a smarter focus at Elland Road, especially as Jesse Marsch had to use centre-back Pascal Struijk at full-back on Saturday.

The 22-year-old coped well in the Premier League opener against Wolves, earning a respectable 6.7 rating from Sofascore, but a new left-back would give Leeds strength in depth alongside the injured Junior Firpo.

A new centre-forward could also be more beneficial than a new winger, with Patrick Bamford (injury-plagued last season) and Joe Gelhardt (still just 20) the main options up top at this moment in time.
