Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has been reacting to the club’s recent move for Celtic stopper Rory Mahady.

The Lowdown: Mahady signs for Leeds

The Whites have bolstered their academy with a number of additions this summer, with Mahady the latest to arrive.

Regarded as ‘one of the best young keepers in Britain’, the 16-year-old swapped Celtic for Elland Road, with Leeds confirming that the teenager has signed a two-year scholarship in Yorkshire.

He was joined by nine other Leeds youngsters in penning two-year deals, including highly-rated midfielder Archie Gray, who has already been on the first team fringes.

The Latest: Robinson reacts

Talking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson - who also contributes for Sky Sports - had his say on Victor Orta's move for Mahady, labelling it an ‘area of real importance’ for Leeds.

The 42-year-old stated:

“I read that. Listen, they need strength in depth and the goalkeeper area is an area they need that in.

“If you look at the first-team, I know they’ve signed Joel Robles but as in strength in depth in that specific area, it’s not something they’ve had.

“It would be nice to see if they’re promoting from within but if they don’t have anyone then they’ll have to look elsewhere and outsource. It’s an area of real importance.”

The Verdict: Good to see

Both Manchester City and Tottenham were also linked with the highly-rated Mahady, so Leeds may feel that they have landed another academy coup.

Supporters may not see much of the 16-year-old over the coming years, but if he impresses at underage level, he could be handed a professional deal following his scholarship.

Leeds have reaped the rewards in the first-team with academy moves over recent times, with Joe Gelhardt being one such example, so over the next few years, Mahady could be in line to take over from Illan Meslier.
