Illan Meslier has penned a new five-year deal with Leeds to keep him at Elland Road until 2026.

The Lowdown: Meslier a key man at Leeds

Marcelo Bielsa has built a wonderful team at Leeds, with numerous key figures throughout the team.

One of those players is undoubtedly Meslier, with the 21-year-old a revelation between the sticks and starting 35 Premier League games last season.

Not only is he already a top-class goalkeeper, but he is so young that he could be a massive figure for the Whites for many years to come.

The Latest: New deal sorted

Taking to Twitter on Thursday night, The Athletic's Phil Hay provided a big update on the Frenchman's future, revealing 'another development' at Leeds and saying a deal looked imminent with 'advanced talks' ongoing.

Meslier's contract was set to expire in the summer of 2023, and Hay's reveal has now been confirmed by the club, with that deal extended another three years.

The Verdict: Major boost for Whites

Tying Meslier down to a new deal is huge for Leeds, considering what an influential player he is at Elland Road.

The youngster is both great with his feet and an expert shot-stopper - he averaged 30.9 passes per game in the league last season - while former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has hailed him as 'fearsome'.

Should the time come when Meslier decides he wants a fresh challenge, Leeds will at least know that a big fee would be needed to prise him away, assuming his new contract is agreed.

Failing that, if the Whites continue to develop at the same rapid rate they have in recent seasons, one could see him staying through the duration of the deal and becoming a club legend.
