The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has discussed Ian Poveda’s situation at Leeds United, calling his time at the club ‘strange’.
The 20-year-old winger has struggled to find regular playing time at Elland Road this season, appearing twice on the substitutes’ bench this but making no appearances.
Assessing the youngster’s time with the Whites, Hay said to a recent Q&A: “It was slightly strange with him [Poveda] – he came in, trained well and made a couple of matchday squads but then disappeared from view completely.
“With Bielsa, you automatically assume that Poveda wasn’t hitting the right levels of fitness or performance.
“That tends to dictate Bielsa’s selection policy and to the best of our knowledge, Poveda hasn’t been injured.”
Despite not featuring for Leeds’ first team, Poveda has had six appearances for the club’s under-23 side in Premier League 2, where he has one goal and gained two assists.
It certainly seems strange that Bielsa would not use the London-born attacker after taking him on loan but perhaps the youngster’s time will come in the Premier League next season.
For now the last thing he should do is grow impatient. Bielsa is more than willing to hand young players a chance in the first team and you can see no reason why Poveda would not get an opportunity if Leeds seal promotion with matches to spare.
