Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay is expecting the club to open talks with Jack Harrison over a new deal.

The Lowdown: Newcastle rumours

Harrison was heavily linked with an Elland Road exit over the summer after Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha left Yorkshire.

Newcastle United were thought to be extremely keen on the 25-year-old and reportedly even made a big-money offer. However, as we know, Harrison remained a Leeds player and has enjoyed a bright start to the season, contributing to four Premier League goals in the club’s first six games.

The Latest: Contract update

Hay held a Q&A for The Athletic on Wednesday morning, with one topic of conversation being Harrison’s contract.

When asked about plans regarding the winger’s future, Hay said he expects talks to begin soon.

“The plan was to open talks with him after the window closed and I’d expect that to happen. It has to be done because like you say, if he’s down to 12 months at the end of this season, then Leeds will have to think about selling him, but they’ll be in no position to maximise his value.”

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

Harrison’s current deal is due to expire in 2024, so the coming months will be the ideal time for Leeds to extend that. Hailed as 'unplayable' by BBC Leeds writer Adonis Storr, Harrison appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high £16.2m Transfermarkt valuation.

Leeds have helped him go from strength to strength over the last four years and are starting to reap the rewards in the top flight, and after losing Raphinha in the summer, it is vital that the Whites keep hold of Harrison going forward.
