Leeds United youngster Archie Gray has suffered an unfortunate toe injury at home, reliable journalist Phil Hay has reported.

The Lowdown: Gray impressing at Leeds

The 16-year-old is considered a hugely exciting prospect at Elland Road, having already progressed into the under-21 team despite his tender years.

Gray has registered four assists in 19 appearances at that level, also scoring once, and there are high hopes that he could be a future regular for the Whites. He also featured for Jesse Marsch's first team in pre-season, incurring a nasty injury, coincidentally against today's opponents Aston Villa.

Unfortunately, the teenager has suffered another fitness setback, and in rather bizarre circumstances too.

The Latest: Unlucky injury

Taking on Twitter on Friday ahead of Leeds' Premier League clash against Aston Villa this afternoon, Hay confirmed that Gray has picked up a toe issue while at home.

The Athletic journalist stated:

"Marsch says Gray injured his toe in an accident at home - stubbed it on a door."

The Verdict: Only a short absence

The hope is that this is nothing more than a short-term absence for Gray, who is progressing at such a rapid rate, being hailed as a 'future England star' by Jamie Redknapp.

Granted, the attacking midfielder's absence isn't going to affect Jesse Marsch's Premier League plans, given that he is yet to make his senior competitive debut, but it is essential that injuries don't hamper his progress, as can be the case for some young players.

The hope is that Gray continues to grow into the force that many expect him to be, potentially making his full Leeds debut at some point during the campaign, perhaps against Wolves in the Carabao Cup next month.
