Leeds United have the option to recall youngster Ian Poveda from his loan at Blackpool, reliable journalist Graham Smyth has confirmed.

The Lowdown: Poveda out of favour at Leeds

The 22-year-old hasn't featured for the Whites since the 2020/21 season, when he made 14 appearances in the Premier League but didn't start a single game in the competition.

Poveda spent last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers, only appearing ten times in the Championship before suffering an injury and returning to Elland Road ahead of the 2022/23 season.

He is clearly not part of Jesse Marsch's plans, however, so another temporary exit seemed inevitable.

The Latest: Blackpool eye up loan move

Taking to Twitter, Smyth confirmed the deal but also revealed Poveda could come back to Yorkshire in the winter transfer window.

"Ian Poveda goes on loan to Blackpool for the season. Leeds United can recall him in January."

The Verdict: Makes perfect sense

This feels like a no-brainer for all parties, allowing Poveda more playing time than he would get at Leeds and getting an unwanted player out of the Whites' squad for the season.

The Englishman is a talented young footballer  - he has been hailed as 'aggressive' and 'very direct' by Noel Whelan in the past - but it looks increasingly clear that his future lies away from Elland Road.

That said, the club may still be reeling from their dramatic injury issues which plagued the 2021/22 campaign, so adding in the security blanket of a recall option was a wise call from Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani.
