Leeds: Beren Cross backs Mateusz Klich for January exit

Leeds: Beren Cross backs Mateusz Klich for January exit -Leeds United News

Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich could make a January exit from the club, according to journalist Beren Cross.

The Lowdown: Klich stay put beyond summer

The 32-year-old ended up remaining a Whites player beyond the summer transfer window, despite reports linking him with a move away from Elland Road.

Klich’s current Leeds deal runs out in 2024, and it seems unlikely that he will be extending his stay beyond that date, having turned 32 this year.

While a summer exit next year has arguably been expected, a new claim suggests he may not even make it that far.

The Latest: January exit mooted

Writing in a Q&A for Leeds Live, Cross claimed that Klich could seal a January exit from Leeds, should he continue to lack playing time under Jesse Marsch:

“Given how close Klich was to leaving this summer, you would imagine this is his last contract at Leeds. He could go in January or next summer if his squad status doesn’t improve.”

The Verdict: Next summer more ideal

Klich moving on in January would certainly come as a surprise – he has been hailed as a ‘wonderful’ player by David Prutton – although his struggle for regular football does make it more understandable.

The Pole is yet to start a Premier League game this season, making six substitute appearances, with Marsch clearly not seeing him as a key man currently.

It would be a huge blow to lose Klich midway through the season, though, with the veteran providing crucial depth in a squad struggling for goalscoring options and still reeling from last season’s injury nightmare.
