Leeds United could potentially look at signing former Atletico Madrid defender Sime Vrsaljko, claims LeedsLive’s George Bennett and Matthew Hobkinson.

The Lowdown: Vrsaljko profiled

Vrsaljko is currently without a club after leaving Olympiacos and can play as a right-back or a right-midfielder.

The 31-year-old, who represented Croatia on 52 occasions, is best known for his time at Atletico Madrid, where he made 100 appearances under the tough regime of Diego Simeone.

He’s also plied his trade in Italy and Croatia, but is currently available for transfer despite the winter window shutting on Tuesday.

The Latest: Leeds claim

LeedsLive’s Bennett and Hobkinson shared a story on Wednesday evening, looking at free agents the Whites can still sign.

They named Vrsaljko as a potential option after the club sent Cody Drameh on loan to Luton Town, whereas Luke Ayling’s contract is set to expire in the summer.

The Verdict: Avoid…

If Leeds are looking in the free agent market, you could say that a right-footed centre-back is required after the club parted ways with Diego Llorente.

Robin Koch is the only right-footed centre-back out of the four senior options, although Ayling can provide cover as a centre-back if needed.

Koch is actually suspended for this weekend’s trip to Nottingham Forest, so it’ll be interesting to see what Jesse Marsch goes with on the right side, but offering Ayling a new deal could be a wise move, especially as he has seemingly become first choice once again ahead of summer signing Rasmus Kristensen, starting the last four Premier League games.
