Sky Sports pundit Tim Sherwood isn’t expecting Leeds United caretaker Michael Skubala to remain in temporary charge against Southampton next weekend.

The Lowdown: Everton defeat

It was confirmed in the week that Skubala would continue to lead first-team duties after back-to-back fixtures with Manchester United.

The Whites have yet to secure Jesse Marsch’s long-term successor and fell to another Premier League defeat on Saturday against Everton. A 1-0 win for the Toffees took them out of the bottom three, with Leeds now sitting in 19th place.

The Latest: Sherwood’s comments

Talking live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday after the game, relayed by MOT Leeds News, Sherwood was asked by Jeff Stelling if he could see a difference under Skubala. Sherwood thinks that will be the last we see of Skubala, and therefore a potential change ahead of next weekend’s crucial clash with Southampton.

“No, not at all. I think that’s the last we see of Michael Skubala to be honest. I think they’ll react, you know what owners and chairman are like, they panic.

“I think they’ll make a decision, I think they need a manager in there as soon as possible to give them a chance, especially in light of the results we’ve seen today.

“They’ve got dragged right back into it. I think he’ll go back and do the [under] 21s. It’s been a tough job for him, he’s had two very difficult games but they performed better against Manchester United than they did today.

“It was almost a must-win game for them, it was a winnable game, it was there for the taking but you have to give credit to Everton.”

The Verdict: Win or bust…

Next weekend’s meeting at Elland Road against the Saints is huge, so if Leeds are to bring in a new manager ahead of that game, they could do with getting it finalised as soon as possible, meaning it could be a busy few days for majority owner Andrea Radrizzani.

The Whites are without a Premier League win since November, and you could argue that anything but three points may spell the end for the club’s time in the top flight.

Skubala’s side failed to register a single shot on target against Everton, so it could be a wise decision to look at a new interim or long-term appointment, with the games starting to run out for Leeds, who are now on just 19 points after 23 games, winning fewer games (4) than any side in the division.
