Leeds United 'will continue to look at' Cody Gakpo ahead of the January transfer window, according to sports journalist Pete O'Rourke, who was speaking to GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

The Whites came agonisingly close to signing the 23-year-old from PSV Eindhoven on Transfer Deadline Day, as The Athletic's Phil Hay explained. Indeed, Leeds' director of football Victor Orta even jetted to the Netherlands for talks with the Eredivisie outfit.

There was an expectation that the deal would get done, with Orta's plane ready to take Gakpo back to England for a medical, only for negotiations to collapse.

The latest

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O'Rourke said that Leeds remain keen to land Gakpo despite the 'blow' of missing out on him on the final day of the transfer window, but he also warned that they would face plenty of competition.

The reporter stated: “Leeds thought there was a real chance that they might get this deal done before the deadline with Victor Orta travelling to Holland to try and get it done, so it was a blow not to get him in the end.

“I think Leeds will continue to look at Gakpo ahead of the January transfer window, as will a number of European clubs.”

The verdict

Gakpo once again showed Leeds and other potential suitors what he was capable of producing in PSV's 1-0 win over RKC Waalwijk on Sunday.

It was his 96th-minute penalty which snatched victory for the hosts, keeping them within three points of league leaders Ajax.

More impressively than that, he created a whopping nine chances for team-mates during the game (via SofaScore). The £7.4k-per-week man also won seven of the eight duels that he contested, drew three fouls, made two interceptions and hit the woodwork twice.

It was an exceptional performance deemed enough to earn a perfect 10 out of 10 rating from SofaScore.

On the one hand, Leeds will feel vindicated by starring displays like this; but on the other, they'll be worried about the extent of the attention that he's bound to garner from elsewhere as a result.
