Leeds United have a tough match against Leicester City tonight, but they will be going into it feeling confident as their last game saw them beat Aston Villa 3-0.
Marcelo Bielsa has suggested that Liam Cooper could finally return from injury against the Foxes. However, former Leeds player Danny Mills believes that there might be one reason why Cooper might not be used tonight.
Mills’ thoughts on Liam Cooper
Speaking to Football Insider, Mills said: “Cooper’s experience is huge but it is an interesting one. Leicester City will set up to play on the counter-attack and Bielsa will possibly be thinking about pace.
“He might have to consider that so there is a chance that Alioski stays in the team and Cooper misses out.
“You have to think about Jamie Vardy and the pace that he possesses. Leeds are likely to dominate possession so Bielsa will be thinking how to nullify that threat.”
Should Cooper start for Leeds tonight
His stats during the three games he has featured in this season emphasises that despite his lack of pace, he still has a lot to give. The defender has managed two tackles and two interceptions on average per game (WhoScored). He has also made 3.7 clearances per game. This highlights that he has been effective when breaking up attacks and this could be vital tonight, despite his lack of pace.
One of Cooper’s teammates, Stuart Dallas, recently heaped praise on the defender. He said: “He does everything the right way, he’s a great leader and a credit to himself and his family.”
All this, plus the fact that Marcelo Bielsa is a highly-rated manager who can easily adapt his team around factors like pace make Mills’ comments seem a bit harsh on Cooper. There is no doubt that if called upon, he could do a very good job.
