Leeds United: Darren Bent backs Illan Meslier despite inconsistency

Leeds United: Darren Bent backs Illan Meslier despite inconsistency -Leeds United News

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has had an up and down season, but Darren Bent is convinced the youngster can fulfil his potential at Elland Road.

What Bent had to say about Meslier

Speaking to Football Insider, Bent said: “He’s a young goalkeeper, he’s only 20. We’ve all seen it, when young goalkeepers come to the Premier League, they wobble a little bit at the start. Look at De Gea, he had a big wobble when he went to United. Kepa’s still wobbling. Even Courtois, he didn’t really hit the ground running.

“So I think it happens to all young goalkeepers. They’ve got to go through a period where it’s a little bit tough for them. But he’s a good goalkeeper and he’s shown at times how good he can be this season.

“So you’ve got to give him a little bit of time to grow. It’s better that he’s getting it out of the way now.The aim is to get past the wobbly stage and don’t look back. But all goalkeepers have periods of inconsistency.”

Meslier has a lot of time to improve

Journalist Phil Hay echoed Bent’s sentiment following a recent poor performance against Tottenham Hotspur as he said: “Leeds United’s risk vs reward mindset is reflected by their faith in Illan Meslier – a goalkeeper with huge potential but who is incredibly young by Premier League standards.”

It has been a fairly decent to the season start for the young Frenchman. He has featured 17 times and has kept six clean sheets (Transfermarkt), whilst helping Leeds currently sit 12th in the division (SofaScore). However there definitely have been some inconsistencies, he has frustrated fans on occasions, and Leeds have conceded 33 goals – this is the second most in the division. (SofaScore).

However, Bent makes a great point where he highlights the inconsistency of other goalkeepers like David De Gea when he was younger. A goalkeeper under the age of 21 is being trusted by a great manager in Marcelo Bielsa, which emphasises the quality that he has and the club should definitely stick by him.

In other Leeds news, the club have attempted to hijack a deal for a young defender – have a read who it is here!
