Leeds United have been without key midfielder Kalvin Phillips for the last few Premier League games due to injury. He is reportedly close to making his return to action as he is starting to join training and former striker Darren Bent has discussed how big a boost this is for the club.
What Bent had to say about Phillips and his possible return
Speaking to Football Insider, Bent said: “That’s massive. He’s one of their most important players, if not the most important. You can see how much they’ve missed him, the way he covers the midfield with that tenaciousness in the middle. He’s coming back now and that will be a big, big boost for everybody concerned.
“We’ve all been excited about Leeds coming in and the way they’re playing but they’re conceding way too many goals. They need to address that but having some of your best players back like him back can only help.
“There’s been a number of them like Mateusz Klich and Patrick Bamford that have stepped up and done well. Leeds’ problem at the minute is conceding goals because they’ve been conceded way too many recently.”
Phillips returning is a huge boost for Leeds
Jamie Redknapp has praised the midfielder this season, saying: “I always look at midfielders, and when they look like they’ve got time on the ball, for me, they’re doing the right thing because sometimes everyone looks a little bit flustered. But the game, he makes [football] look easy.”
The English midfielder has had an impressive start to life in the Premier League. The 24-year-old has been a menace for opposition attacks as he managed, on average, 3.4 tackles, 1.6 interceptions, and 1.2 clearances (WhoScored) per game before the injury.
The three games that Bielsa has been without the midfielder in the Premier League have seen the Whites concede eight goals. Meanwhile, when he featured, the club only conceded six goals in five matches (Transfermarkt).
The stats suggest that Leeds are missing an enforcer-type player in the middle of the pitch due to Phillips’ absence and therefore, his imminent return is great news as Bent suggests.
