Leeds United have become used to Kalvin Phillips receiving an England call-up, but he has missed out on the latest squad due to injury. However, many wondered if Patrick Bamford could have been in with a shout this time as well.
He didn’t make the latest squad, but Gareth Southgate did however challenge the striker to continue his form into 2021 and this should give him a lot of hope he can make it in the future.
Southgate’s comments on Bamford
Speaking via the Yorkshire Evening post, Southgate said: “Callum Wilson and Patrick Bamford have done very well in the last few weeks for their clubs. We’re only a quarter of the way through the season, the next time we’re together we’ll be three quarters of the way through the season. There’s a lot of football to be played and a lot of opportunity for those players to press a claim while they’re playing with their clubs.”
Does Bamford’s form at Leeds deserve a call-up?
The 27 year-old has definitely shocked a few with his good form in the first seven games of the Premier League season. In these appearances, he has scored six goals and picked up one assist (WhoScored). Bamford has also managed 3.9 shots per game. This all highlights he has become a huge attacking threat for Leeds.
His form definitely warrants him being discussed when it comes to England, but arguably the striker position is the hardest to break into for the Three Lions. Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Tammy Abraham and the injured Danny Ings are all battling for the position. Callum Wilson is also in a similar position to Bamford so there is a lot of competition.
Bielsa has been full of praise for his striker, and after his great performance against Aston Villa, the manager said: “He scored some wonderful goals. Apart from that a noble player who sacrifices a lot for the team – generous also.”
Bamford just has to keep on playing to the level Bielsa has come to expect consistently for him to be given a chance by Southgate. If he can do this until the first international break in 2021, then he is giving the manager a huge selection dilemma.
