Leeds United narrowly lost to Everton on Wednesday, and the two goals the Toffees scored could have been defended a lot better. The performance has seen talkSPORT host Jason Cundy fume at Leeds for their ‘pub league’ approach to matches.
What Cundy had to say about Leeds
Cundy slated the club as he told talkSPORT: “Leeds… what? They’re just a funny side, Leeds. They’ll give you opportunities. You wouldn’t ever have them on your accumulator coupon.
“I think they get too much praise. When they go forward that’s what you want to see, you want to see team attack. But when you see them defend, certain for the first goal, it’s like a pub league!”
Bielsa will not be listening
Marcelo Bielsa’s sides are known for being fearless and showing a lot of attacking intent. The Whites have conceded 38 goals this season which is the second most in the top flight (SofaScore), but this will not be a major worry for the manager.
This is due to the fact that they sit eleventh and 15 points from the relegation zone, a more than respectable margin for a newly promoted team – perhaps Cundy’s criticism would be better placed towards the other two promoted sides, who are both in the bottom three.
They also have scored 36 goals (SofaScore) and this is the fifth-most in the division. This emphasises that they can afford to leak goals on occasion because of their excellence going forward, and while Bielsa will no doubt want to sure up the defence when he aims higher up the table next season, his side’s attacking quality is good enough to keep them in the division with points to spare, which is always the goal in the first campaign after promotion.
