Leeds United are reportedly eyeing a potential January transfer move for Philadelphia Union left-back Kai Wagner.

The Lowdown: Leeds previously linked with Wagner

The Premier League club were linked with a move for the 25-year-old during the previous summer transfer window, with Jesse Marsch reportedly keen on securing his signature.

The German's latest season with the MLS club saw him make 37 appearances in total and provide nine assists along the way.

With the next January transfer window nearly set to open, the Whites could once again look to make Marsch's summer wish come true and sign Wagner.

The Latest: Wagner on Leeds' radar

In a recent report for The Athletic, written by Phil Hay, he discussed the January window and Leeds' interest in Wagner.

The reporter wrote: 'Leeds want to make changes to their squad in January, ideally through the addition of a striker and a left-back. Kai Wagner at Philadelphia Union is one of the defenders on the list of possibilities.'

The Verdict: A smart target for Leeds

Looking back over Wagner's latest MLS campaign, he routinely showed how useful an attacking full-back he can be.

For example, the 25-year-old - who has been hailed as a "unique" player by his manager Jim Curtin - ended the season with more key passes (82), shot-creating actions (123) and crosses (311) than any other Philadelphia player.

From a defensive point of view, Wagner made the second-most interceptions (55) in the squad and also had the highest percentage of aerial duels won (73.1%) of any outfield player at Union.

This suggests that not only would the left-back add an extra attacking dynamic to the Elland Road outfit, but also provide another reliable defensive option for Marsch.

Bearing in mind how Leeds currently have left-back Junior Firpo out injured, just like positional alternative Stuart Dallas, securing a January deal for Wagner would be a very smart move for the Whites.
