Leeds laid out a big message to the league when Victor Orta signed fellow Spaniard Rodrigo for £27 million in the summer. Despite this big fee though, Kevin Phillips does not believe that he will get the nod against Everton.
Kevin Phillips discusses Rodrigo
Speaking to Football Insider about the striker, Kevin Phillips said: “I am not sure Bielsa will start Rodrigo. It would be a big call to bring him back in because Leeds were very, very unlucky at the weekend against Arsenal. They deserved to win the football and match and how they didn’t is beyond me. It might be a case of keeping the same team and going again.
“Bielsa might come up with something we didn’t expect. If he does start it is now the time for him to find his form and prove his worth. We have seen glimpses but if he comes in he has to perform. If I was Bielsa I would certainly not be worrying about relegation if you perform like that every week.
“That team is so fit, they just keep going and going. Leeds need someone else to step up and help Bamford score goals and that is what Rodrigo was brought there for.”
The Spaniard will have to bide his time
He came on against Arsenal at the weekend and it is easy to see why Leeds signed him in the first place . He picked up a 7.1 rating (SofaScore) as he made two key passes and was unlucky not to score, hitting the woodwork.
Noel Whelan emphasised his quality too, calling him a ‘dangerous‘ player for the club. However, with the form of Patrick Bamford, it is hard to see the Spaniard starting as the main striker any time soon.
With 113 goals to his name (Transfermarkt) there is no doubt that Rodrigo will come good for Leeds, but for now he must bide his time and continue producing positive displays when the chances do come around.
In other news, one player is desperate to prove himself to Marcelo Bielsa at the club. Have a read who it is here!
